3/19/2023 0 Comments Gramps family tree maker![]() ![]() Wasn’t going to write a review (and I know this is not a Forum) but, having read Alex’s rant about report content, I felt obliged to reply. Overall, it is a great program.īiggest Pro: Excellent charts and reports use with Apple, Linux, and Windows always 100% free drag-and-drop mediaīiggest Con: Not connected to online database sites, such as FamilySearch and Find a Grave I’ve tried most of the free and commercial programs on the market, and I still depend on Gramps. When I use software that does that, I just import it into my master tree in Gramps. If it had that functionality, I’d give it 5-stars. ![]() The big drawback for me is that is not yet accessing online databases, such as FamilySearch and Find a Grave, or seeking research hints. It handles adoptions and step-parents very well. The range of charts and reports is unrivaled, and the plugins are fantastic. It is very easy to use and is quite straight-forward. The program is free and available for Apple, Linux, and Windows systems. This has been my standby for decades, since I left Family Tree Maker. While it’ll probably always be my master tree, the good news is that it’s quite easy to export your database into a variety of formats, including GEDCOM, allowing for easy transfer of trees.īiggest Pro: Amount of features, free, comprehensiveīiggest Con: Learning curve, inability to connect to websites Generally, how I work is that I subscribe for a small time to Ancestry, save as the sources, and then import them to GRAMPS (adding the indexed info as a note in GRAMPS).Īll in all, it’s an excellent program, although I admit sometimes it can be frustrating. Gramplets are also a pretty cool idea, letting you tailer the views of all the different tabs. This ranges from dozens of reports, to multiple different geography views, to different chart views, to overviews of individuals, and just general statistics. ![]() I think the most important pro of GRAMPS is just the amount of features - with even more once you include plugins. The only con I think has a reasonable point to it is the inability to connect to websites like Ancestry, although that is not too surprising. This allows you to easily add people by clicking a blank spot above a person, as well as editing families by right-clicking and pressing edit on the line between two married people. It’s not really explained that well, but essentially you’ll want to go to the charts tab and do most of your work on the pedigree. But once you have learned it… Oh boy, it is powerful.įirst of all, I’d like to address the common complaint of adding people/families. And I do admit that it takes a couple of hours to learn. Look, after reading some other reviews it seems most people’s main problem is how the system can be somewhat clunky. ![]()
